Ph.D. in Public and Applied Sociology

 

The Program’s Core:

The emerging field of Public and Applied Sociology, the systematic effort to engage in and solve social problems, to infuse sociological thinking into public debates and decisions, and to bring theoretical and empirical sociology into direct dialogue with the practical realities of the social world

Along with a strong theoretical foundation in sociology, our program offers: Extensive methodological training; Practicum options for experiential learning; A range of research methods, both quantitative and qualitative.

Students will gain rigorous training in applied social research, including skills in research design, data analysis, and substantive areas that are pertinent to various sectors within the DC Metropolitan region.

Dissertation:

 

Students will complete 3 hours of coursework leading to approval of the thesis proposal. Following approval of the thesis proposal, students will complete an additional 12 hours of dissertation research.

 

Practicum:

 

Doctoral students will be required to satisfy a three credit practicum requirement. Students may fulfill this requirement through different means. Students may enroll in three-credit-hour practicum experience (translated to twenty practicum hours per week in one semester or 10 hours per week across two semesters) in a governmental or non-governmental organization. Students will select a faculty practicum advisor who will serve as liaison between the practicum site and the University. With the support of their faculty practicum advisor, students will identify practicum sites and site preceptors which should have a direct bearing on plans for their dissertation research. A personalized practicum plan will be established and signed by the practicum site preceptor, the student, and the faculty practicum advisor. Students may also fulfill the requirement through current and previous work site if appropriate. The graduate director will review and determine the appropriateness of the site.
